Description

The Crescent is an emission nebula, like Thor’s Helmet, powered by a Wolf-Rayet star. It’s a very faint object in Cygnus about 5,000 light years distant. As with Thor’s Helmet, the fascinating patterns were created by a shock wave from the WR star colliding with material it ejected earlier in its life. The nebula is rich in red ionized hydrogen gas, but the blue and white wispy features comprise mostly oxygen. One unique thing about this WR-powered nebula is that the initial shock wave created a backlash that produced an inward shock wave, which is what created the cerebral pattern, making it look like a space brain. The whole time we were working on this, I had a large earworm: “I could while away the hours, conferring with the flowers, consulting with the rain. . . .”

Description: I'd ultimately like to shoot this in mono, but in the last year, I've been shooting other targets in Cygnus. This revision uses exactly the same data I captured two years ago to produce the original, but I wanted to revisits it with new processing skills while it's cloudy outside.
